Paris, the city of light, the capital of a country so proud of its living standards, its freedom and its rights. For thousands of Chinese wanting to escape widespread unemployment back home, it is a dreamland.

Yet, when they arrive, they find themselves locked in a cycle of exploitation, unable to make a living and too debt-laden to turn back.

This story looks at a new wave of immigrant workers from China’s northeastern rustbelt, which suffered massive closures to make way for nimble manufacturing bases in the coastal provinces. [ Full text ]
