Workers prepare to drill into the permafrost at a well in Novy Urengoi, Siberia, Russia. The drill bits, embedded with diamond discs along the cutter, cost around 50,000 euros each. This is part of my ongoing Arctic series.
A drilling well in Arctic Siberia, Russia. It stands on permafrost.
I’ve been working in the #Arctic since 2009. First instalment of the story was published in @GEOfr & Chinese @NatGeo http://t.co/1N6OAFgB34

An arial view of ice roads that pave the way for vehicles. They will melt and disappear when Spring comes. #Russia http://t.co/DzvWVbas0g

A couple weeks ago as I headed from Europe to Arctic Siberia in -40C for a photographic assignment, my baggage containing all my clothes were lost by the airline, so I arrived in Moscow with a T-shirt, a fleece and a bag of cameras. By great fortune I bumped into photographer Yuriy Chichkov at the airport, and he led me on a high-speed scramble for Arctic wear in Moscow before my next flight took off to the icy desert that night. Thank you, Yuriy.
Home sweet home… for a short assignment in Hong Kong.
